How will the River reach you?

The story of San Antonio begins with the river. It is the basis of our culture and the soul of our heritage. As one of the nation’s largest cities it is vital that we remain connected to our city center and build on our cultural roots as we grow.

The river reaches all of us in different ways: as a gathering place, a resting place, and a center for cultural enrichment. It provides us with an opportunity to experience and learn about the environment and the importance of water, our most valuable resource.

The San Antonio River Foundation is the only non-profit organization preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of our river. Thanks to private donations, the River Foundation has funded engaging and diverse public art and abundant native landscaping within the 1.2 mile Museum Reach. This once neglected urban stretch of river is now a vibrant destination for locals and tourists alike and is a catalyst to encourage urban renewal, attract residents to downtown, and bring new businesses to San Antonio.

Our continuing work is focused on the possibilities within the Mission Reach — the 8-mile southward trail which begins at Lone Star Boulevard and meanders past all 4 Spanish missions. The San Antonio River Foundation is proposing an exciting mix of public amenities that will only be possible with private donations to the Foundation. Imagine strolling on a boardwalk over wetlands for a close-up view of flora and fauna or sitting in a butterfly garden in the migratory path of the monarch. Walk or bike to a sustainably designed park, or cool off on a hot San Antonio day at a community water playground. Spend a day bird watching high above the ground on fly-over bridges. Attend an art class in an outdoor learning center. Experience dynamic public art works made in collaboration with landscape architects and historians through portals which will reconnect the river to the missions.

Together we can transform our city and fortify our economic future. We can support efforts to rehabilitate of our river’s ecosystem, reunite with our cultural roots, create new landmarks, and reach toward our city’s potential.

Join us as we enhance and restore our most valuable resource, the San Antonio River, for generations to come.
